Historical Types of Rationality :: Culture History Essays

Dynamic: In this paper we propose that the contemporary worldwide scholarly emergency of our (Western) development comprises in the principal change of the old style (both Ancient and Modern) kinds of reasonability towards the nonclassical one. We give a short record of those old style kinds of sanity and spotlight on the more point by point portrayal of the contemporary procedure of the arrangement of the new HTR which we name as nonclassical. We believe it to be one of the chronicled conceivable outcomes that may drastically change the basics of our human world; truth be told, this procedure has just started. The paper makes reference to a portion of the principle highlights of this procedure, for example, development of another kind of logical item; new applied plans; new consistent and methodological gear of logical research; and new comprehension of human instinct, human psyche, human activity, and social request. Presentation Moving toward the finish of our thousand years it turns out to be increasingly more apparent that the advanced sort of levelheadedness which has ruled Western culture since the seventeenth century-is in emergency; that it has arrived at the constraints of its possibilities and something new is being made. We appear to encounter the worldwide emergency of cognizance which maybe concerns principal inquiries of our social character and signals all out social emergency of our human progress. Or on the other hand would we say we are just encountering the continuation from old style to current (Krã ¡l 1994)? Is the emergency of advancement a perpetual state from which it is extremely unlikely out and where we can do nothing other than to suffer courageously the destiny within recent memory (Weber 1983)? Would it be advisable for us to conform to its anamnesis as deconstruction and in this way to submit to the boundaries of its polarities (Lyotard 1993, Derrida 1993)? Or on the other hand is this emergency something impermanent? Would it be advisable for us to have faith later on and trust that remodel of the past will happen in our pluralist society (Ricoeur 1992)? Do we face an unequivocal turnabout comprising in an arrival to the previous, a reconsideration of the Orient and a valorization of environment (F. Capra 1983)? Would it be a good idea for us to look for an option in glorification of nature and desacralization of culture (Griffin 1988)? Does the best approach to safeguard progress lead through redemption of the individual self from the mistreatment of obtuse reasonability? Poetry Billy Collins, Marilyn Nelson, Ruth Forman - 1375 Words

Introduction to Poetry by Billy Collins, How I Discovered Poetry by Marilyn Nelson (Essay Sample) Content: Name of StudentName of InstructorSubjectDatePoetryThe poems: Introduction to Poetry by Billy Collins, How I Discovered Poetry by Marilyn Nelson, Poetry Should Ride the Bus by Ruth Forman, How Poetry Comes to Me by Gary Snyder, Making it in Poetry by Bob Hicok, and Poem by Carlos Williams have related themes. Each of them have a theme that contributes in explaining the meaning and/or the significance of poetry but are different in how they bring out this explanation. To start with, Billy Collins Introduction to Poetry dramatizes the conflict between fun and difficulty/complexity of poetry. In an interview by Elizabeth Farnsworth of the PBS NewsHour, on this poem, Collins says, I want them to water-ski across the surface of a poem waving at the authors name on the shore but all they want to do is tie the poem to a chair with rope and torture a confession out of it  (356). In this statement, Collins shows the antagonistic nature of students when they are reading poems. Students do not want to get the real purpose of poetry, but quickly goes ahead to judge it by its complexity. The speaker in this poem is a teacher telling students that they should find fun in poetry by understanding it instead of focusing on its complexity. The largest part of the poem is written with a cheerful tone, where the speaker explains that poetry should be enjoyed. For instance, in the ninth line, Billy Collins writes, I want them to water-ski . Water-skiing can be understood in two ways; a fun sport and a hard game to understand. In this regard it is apparent that the Collins wanted to show that although poetry is complex and difficult, it is to be enjoyable. Billy Collins also uses the statement, feel the wall for a light switch  and the simile like a color slide  (356) to imply that poetry is fun, but the readers must see through a poem in order to understand and enjoy it. Towards the end of the poem, Collins contrasts the fun in poetry in a humorous tone, w here he mentions torture  and beating  (356). Here, he shows that readers like to concentrate on the complexity of poetry instead of seeing the fun in it.The poem How I Discovered Poetry  by Marilyn Nelson illustrates that the poetry is for everyone; even those that are looked down upon. This poems narrator is a student telling a general public how he/she overcame fear in reading poetry and for this reason caught the attention of his classmates who used to despise him. In these terms, it is also clear that this poem shows that poetry can earn you respect. In an interview by Teenreads, Marilyn Nelson says, the effect on my white classmates of her humiliating me  (378) to show that the narrator of the poem overcame his/her teachers humiliation by being able to read a poem. In other words, Marilyn means that poetry earned the narrator back his/her respect, meaning that poetry has a bigger role in the society than most people would understand. In writing this poem, Marilyn u ses words, statements, and phrases with hidden meanings making it hard for a reader to quickly grasp the theme of the poem. For example, she uses the words darkie , packaninnies , and disses  to mean a black person, and the statement to the all except for me class  (378). Without being curious, a reader could not easily notice that the narrator is speaking about racism. This poem is similar to Billy Collins poem because they both show appreciation for poetry. Billy Collins shows that poetry should be fun and Marilyn Nelson shows that poetry can earn a person respect and that it is for all. However, although the two poems are based in the setting of a school, the latter uses the concept of racism to bring out her idea while Billy uses the concept of how to read in a way that allows one to understand and enjoy poems. In my opinion, both of the poets maneuvers through their chosen concepts effectively, and successfully brings out their intended influence. On reading the two poems, I experienced a higher appreciation for poetry. They showed me a greater purpose for this art than I had before.Same as Nelsons How I Discovered Poetry and Collins Introduction to Poetry, the main theme of Ruth Formans Poetry Should Ride the Bus is to show appreciation for poetry. Unlike the first two poets, Forman dwells entirely on imagery to show what poetry should do. In fact, the title, Poetry Should Ride the Bus  is imagery with a deeper meaning that poetry should lead. Forman uses polka dot dress  and bright-red lipstick practicing kisses in the mirror  (402) to show how poetry impresses men. The poems use of imagery perfectly achieves the purpose of the poem and at the end of reading the poem one feels that poetry deserves a better position than it currently holds in the society. This poem, however, did not convince me to like poetry as much as the two previously discussed poems probably because the two talks of real life issues. The poem How Poetry comes to Me reveals poetry as a natural value and gift of life that someone spends his/her lifetime looking for. The use of the word my (421) in the fourth line shows that the poem is written in the first person, which in turn indicates that the poet is also the speaker in the poem. In this poem, Gary Synders expresses himself as strongly attached to his poems. In the first and second line where he says, It comes blundering over the Boulders at night, it stays  (421), Synders want to reassure people that his poems are sincere and real. He also describes his poems as extraordinary when he says I go meet it at the edge of the light  which means that he composes his poems away from what is already known in order to come up with something new. Although this poem is similar to the three poems discussed above in the sense that it shows a higher value for poetry, it is a bit different because the poet narrows the value to his own poems. This is clearly reveled when he says Frightened outside the range of my campfire  and when he uses the word my (421). Same as Formans poem, this poem influenced me only a little towards having a higher value for poetry because of the personification. With this personification, Synders seems more like he is praising his poems rather than showing what they really are. This aspect of him was revealed during an interview by Nicholas Readings and Jennifer Merrifield, where he said, when I started writing poetry, I carried on very neatly .Bob Hicoks How to Make It in Poetry&e...

The Efficient Markets Hypothesis

The efficient markets hypothesis has historically been one of the main cornerstones of academic finance research. Proposed by the University of Chicagos Eugene Fama in the 1960s, the general concept of the efficient markets hypothesis is that financial markets are informationally efficient- in other words, that asset prices in financial markets reflect all relevant information about an asset. One implication of this hypothesis is that, since there is no persistent mispricing of assets, it is virtually impossible to consistently predict asset prices in order to beat the market- i.e. generate returns that are higher than the overall market on average without incurring more risk than the market. The intuition behind the efficient markets hypothesis is pretty straightforward- if the market price of a stock or bond was lower than what available information would suggest it should be, investors could (and would) profit (generally via arbitrage strategies) by buying the asset. This increase in demand, however, would push up the price of the asset until it was no longer underpriced. Conversely, if the market price of a stock or bond was higher than what available information would suggest it should be, investors could (and would) profit by selling the asset (either selling the asset outright or short selling an asset that they dont own). In this case, the increase in the supply of the asset would push down the price of the asset until it was no longer overpriced. In either case, the profit motive of investors in these markets would lead to correct pricing of assets and no consistent opportunities for excess profit left on the table. Technically speaking, the efficient markets hypothesis comes in three forms. The first form, known as the weak form (or weak-form efficiency), postulates that future stock prices cannot be predicted from historical information about prices and returns. In other words, the weak form of the efficient markets hypothesis suggests that asset prices follow a random walk and that any information that could be used to predict future prices is independent of past prices. The second form, known as the semi-strong form (or semi-strong efficiency), suggests that stock prices react almost immediately to any new public information about an asset. In addition, the semi-strong form of the efficient markets hypothesis claims that markets dont overreact or underreact to new information. The third form, known as the strong form (or strong-form efficiency), states that asset prices adjust almost instantaneously not only to new public information but also to new private information. Put more simply, the weak form of the efficient markets hypothesis implies that an investor cant consistently beat the market with a model that only uses historical prices and returns as inputs, the semi-strong form of the efficient markets hypothesis implies that an investor cant consistently beat the market with a model that incorporates all publicly available information, and the strong form of the efficient markets hypothesis implies that an investor cant consistently beat the market even if his model incorporates private information about an asset. One thing to keep in mind regarding the efficient markets hypothesis is that it doesnt imply that no one ever profits from adjustments in asset prices. By the logic stated above, profits go to those investors whose actions move the assets to their correct prices. Under the assumption that different investors get to the market first in each of these cases, however, no single investor is consistently able to profit from these price adjustments. (Those investors who were able to always get in on the action first would be doing so not because asset prices were predictable but because they had an informational or execution advantage, which is not really inconsistent with the concept of market efficiency.) The empirical evidence for the efficient markets hypothesis is somewhat mixed, though the strong-form hypothesis has pretty consistently been refuted. In particular, behavioral finance researchers aim to document ways in which financial markets are inefficient and situations in which asset prices are at least partially predictable. In addition, behavioral finance researchers challenge the efficient markets hypothesis on theoretical grounds by documenting both cognitive biases that drive investors behavior away from rationality and limits to arbitrage that prevent others from taking advantage of the cognitive biases (and, by doing so, keeping markets efficient).

Mercutios Death in William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet

Mercutios Death in William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet In Romeo and Juliet Mercutio is the faithful friend of Romeo. His death comes as a huge shock to the audience, in Act three, Scene one, when he is brutally murdered by Tybalt, the violent cousin of Juliet. To understand the rest of the statement, one also has to look at the difference between a comedy and a tragedy. Shakespeares plays can be separated into three different categories, the comedy, tragedy and the history. The comedy included amusing characters, with a familiar style of writing, humorous incidents and most importantly a happy ending. In contrast, the tragedy used serious or unhappy characters, a more serious, unnatural†¦show more content†¦The language he uses, puns and innuendoes along with his familiar style show Mercutio as definitely comedy personified. On the other hand, we can learn a lot more about Mercutio from Act one, Scene four, where we see another side of him. Mercutio comes across as being unpredictable and violent, as he changes from being joyful to being angry about dreams. We can see this from the way he speaks, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ I talk of dreams, which are the children of an idle brainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ The way that Mercutio changes personality suddenly, and how his words seem to become more and more irate and horrible, This is the hag, when maids lie on their backs, that presses them and makes them first to bear, all make him seem erratic and perhaps even frightening. This other side to Mercutio that talks with the powerful, strong metaphorical images in verse is not how we imagine comedy. However, although Mercutio is unpredictable in this scene, he is mainly a witty character, who appeals to the audience greatly with his language used. I therefore believe that he is comedy personified as he is very clever and comical overall. I think that his death and actions are very important to the play, as he has a fascinating character so that the audience can relate to him, the tension builds up and they becomeShow MoreRelatedRomeo and Juliet Gender Roles1251 Words   |  6 PagesGender Roles in Romeo and Juliet In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Juliet resorts to conniving and shrewd ways in order to control her destiny and free herself from her confined existence. (Kasindorf, 2007) This law held new development to hotels, shops, restaurants, and theme parks. (Kasindorf, 2007) In 2007, Disney began to fight with developer SunCal over a proposal that would put up housing developments within the 2.2 square miles, some of which would be used for low income housing. Disney claimed that allowing the development would dampen the commercial boom. On the opposite side, SunCal claimed that the true problem for Disney was the affordable housing that would be put in. (Kasindorf, 2007) This particular argument has high stakes for market and nonmarket stakeholders due to Disney being the largest employee in Anaheim. A dialogue between SunCal and its stakeholders could encourage the company to go forward if they really feel that there is a chance at winning the argument and being able to build the housing project. However, the same dialogue could also determine that it would be best to sell their acreage for a profit to tourism businesses and buy property for housing outside of the 2.2 square miles that have been zoned for entertainment. Building the housing within the city but outside of the entertainment zone would still allow close and affordable housing but would promote a positive relationship with Disney and all stakeholders.
